British Colonial Collection
The British, who once explored and colonized many regions throughout the world, left a valuable heritage in furniture. Their unique combination of tropical hardwoods, English style and practical design for humid climates makes British Colonial furniture desirable even today.
During the Raj Days, 1858 to 1947, when India and Burma were a part of the British Colonies, the British Colonial furniture makers modified the traditionally conservative British style by adding elaborate ornamentation and carvings to the furniture. Wood was replaced with cane on chairs, tables, sofas and beds to allow the breezes of the Southern Hemisphere to flow freely through the furniture keeping rooms much cooler.
British Colonial furniture, as it is now known, mixes well with both traditional and transitional furniture designs.
